What Our Community Says

Real stories from quilters, heritage workers, and workshop participants across South Africa.

“The Indwangu weaving workshop gave our cooperative a new direction. We now produce contemporary cushion covers using traditional patterns, and orders have doubled in six months.”

Thandi M.

Weaving cooperative lead, KwaZulu-Natal

“I had never sewn a straight line before. After the beginner patchwork course, I finished a lap quilt for my granddaughter. The colour guidance was a game changer.”

Elna V.

Retiree, Cape Town

“Our quilting circle started with six women in a church hall. HobbleCreekQuilting helped us structure the programme, source materials, and now we have forty regular members.”

Nomsa D.

Circle coordinator, Eastern Cape

“The heritage preservation workshop helped our museum catalogue and display a collection of 19th-century quilts. The public response has been overwhelming — visitors finally understand the stories behind the stitches.”

Lindiwe K.

Curator, Johannesburg

Our Journey

From a single workshop to a nationwide network of stitchers and heritage keepers.

2016

First Workshop in Makhanda

A dozen quilters gathered in a community hall to share traditional patchwork techniques. The response was overwhelming — we knew this was just the beginning.

2018

Heritage Preservation Programme Launched

Partnered with three rural cooperatives in KwaZulu-Natal to document and teach Indwangu weaving. Over 40 elders and apprentices participated in the first year.

2020

Virtual Quilting Circles

When in-person gatherings paused, we moved online. Within months, our weekly Zoom circles connected stitchers from six provinces, sharing patterns and stories across distances.

2022

Community Craft Programme Expansion

Secured funding to train 15 facilitators across the Eastern Cape and Western Cape. Each facilitator now leads a local quilting group, with materials and patterns provided centrally.

2024

National Quilt Exhibition & Archive

Hosted the first Hobble Creek National Quilt Show in Cape Town, featuring over 200 works. The accompanying digital archive now holds 500+ documented pieces from across the country.
